After 29+ years
serving the City of Grandview as Director of Bleyhl Community
Library, Linda Dunham
retired on December 31, 2009. Linda was honored at a reception
held on December 29th at the library. Many long-time patrons,
friends and co-workers stopped by to thank her for her years of service and to
wish her well as she begins this next stage in her life. Linda
told the gathering that she looks forward to taking it easy and
doing some things she has long wanted to do.

--a note from
Evan Robb,
Project Manager,

Rural Heritage
Washington
State Library, Office of the Secretary of State
"A big thanks to our contributor-participants
at Bleyhl Community Library and the R.E. Powell Museum,
especially Ruth Dirk (at Bleyhl), who did a wonderful job of
cataloging the collection, and has contributed immensely to its
development and design. Also to Jean Marie Coursey who was
invaluable in tracking down descriptions for R.E. Powell Museum
objects.
According to Ruth, the library is already
using the collection to help patrons with genealogy and local
history questions. A local high school class is working on
a project dealing with Grandview history; this should be a great
resource for them. The collection is also being published
in time for the City of Grandview’s upcoming Centennial."

"Digitization Project Comes to
Grandview Library and Museum"
-Barbara Lauby, Grandview Herald
Grandview residents will soon be able to see
their grandparents’ high school graduation pictures on the
Internet. And the mastodon bone, and two panoramic views of
downtown from the early 20th century, and a
collection of different kinds of barbed wire from the late 19th
century, and the Grandview History compiled in 1927 by the
Pioneer Association.
Grandview’s museum and library collections
will soon join other collections from small and rural libraries
and museums across the state – on the Internet. --more--

Joint City/YVCC Library
In 2007, the Mayor and
City Council and Yakima Valley Community College agreed to
pursue the concept of a new joint library facility on YVCC's
Grandview campus. The college engaged an architect to develop a
preliminary design for a $4 million facility. Early plans
describe a 12,000 square-foot library
that would meet the needs of both the community and college
students. It will improve the ability for YVCC to deliver
high-quality academic, vocational and adult basic education and
will provide informational resources to residents of the Lower
Yakima Valley.
YVCC submitted a $2 million matching grant
application to the State, and has been notified that this
project has been ranked #1 for potential funds from the state
legislature in May 2009. In September of 2008 the federal
government approved a $600,000 grant for the project, leaving a
balance of $1.4 million yet to be raised so the project can
become a reality. If
the $4 million is raised by May 2009, then construction could
begin by late summer 2009 and completed by October 2010.
UPDATE
Funding has been secured, and the City and YVCC have
entered into an agreement providing for the operation of the
library. The Building Committee is in ongoing discussions with
Brockway • Opfer
• Raab Architecture,
P.L.L.C. to design a building that will serve the
needs of our patrons and YVCC students and faculty. The building will be owned by the State, which will
be responsible for the maintenance of the facility. Operating
costs will be shared between the City and YVCC, with an
estimated annual cost savings to the City of approximately
$100,000.
